The Engineered Field;or, A Technological Miracle
An untamed field and a regulation football pitch occupy the same frame. Between them, nature is measured, marked, maintained, and made to perform.
01 / The Work
The natural surface is already an instrument.
An untamed plot holds the frame. A regulation football pitch breaks through it in sudden bursts, disappears, then returns with increasing frequency until the marked surface occupies the image completely.
The transformation is not simply from nature to technology. It reveals one condition inside the other. Grass remains grass, while cultivation, geometry, maintenance, and rules reorganize it as infrastructure.
The loop refuses a final state. Once the pitch resolves, the image faults back into the field. The engineered surface becomes an interval rather than an arrival.

Grip, speed, drainage, visibility, and broadcast all depend on work that remains outside the spectacle.
The pitch is no exception: cut, prepared, and carefully inspected by agricultural engineers, it too is a “technological miracle.”

03 / The Archive
Twelve years later, the sentence returned.
During the 2014 World Cup, Gabriel Dorthe and Johann Roduit wrote about the technologies already present throughout football, especially those made invisible by their familiarity.
The article described the pitch itself as a technological miracle. Returning to that text after another World Cup made the sentence feel less like an observation than an image waiting to be made.
The work turns that sentence into a loop. The field does not vanish beneath technology. It becomes the surface through which technology is seen.

04 / The Glitch
The pitch appears before it arrives.
Nine states document the loop: field, first interruption, acceleration, regulation, and hidden return.
05 / The Lineage
One signal, two material histories.
The second study preserves the frame, timing, interruptions, and return of Stone & Silicon. Only the object changes.
This exact repetition makes the works comparative. Stone becomes processor. Untamed growth becomes regulated play. Across both loops, technology does not arrive from elsewhere. It is drawn from the material already holding the frame.

A fixed moving-image master.
The work is preserved as a nine-second silent video master. Its first and final visual states are identical, allowing the cycle to repeat without a visible seam.
